How to Start an Online MagazineIn Feburary 2016 28,

In Feburary 2016 28,
Define your market by asking
what articles do you want to see in your magazine. What are you passionate about? At first, you may think too broadly. Narrow your focus from subject to topic, especially those topics that are underserved. An online magazine will have a better chance of success if it focuses on a niche market that has a loyal following rather than on a broad market so popular that it’s already well covered.
Test Your Market
Use a blog to test your market. This can serve two purposes: First, to discover if there is reader interest in your planned niche, and second, to increase the odds that readers will discover you. Unlike a print publication, which you can drop in storefronts and sidewalk newsstands that many people will see, it's unlikely that potential readers will stumble across your magazine’s website. A blog allows you to build a mailing list first, even if it comes slowly. That list will be your magazine’s initial subscribers.Invite other bloggers to write guest blogs on your topic or related topics, and trade links with those bloggers. Listen to their advice on shaping your magazine's direction. Be active in social media, announcing every new post. Create buzz even as you finalize plans for the magazine.
Register a Domain Name Early
As soon as you come up with the magazine’s name, register the domain URL that incorporates the name. Domain registration is cheap, and you can take your time before putting up the actual website.
Select a Content Management System
Decide on a blogging/content management system platform for your website. For your editorial department, you will likely have a mix of staff writers and editors, freelance journalists and interns. Your writers will report on stories and interview people and will likely need photos, video and audio media within their articles. Select the platform that’s best suited for handling and displaying this type of journalistic content and will still fit within your expected budget. Mike Johnston of the website CMS Critic noted that platforms such as WordPress.org, Joomla and Drupal are popular, but no single CMS platform is best in all situations. WordPress is the easiest to use, though you should use the WordPress.org version to self-host the site and sell advertising. Johnston described Joomla and Drupal as having more capabilities but generally requiring more expertise. You can choose from free and premium templates for a design that best fits your needs. For CMS platforms designed as a publishing content management system, Johnston listed Bright Spot, eZ Publish and Movable Type. The first two are open-source programs that are free to download, though eZ Publish charges for support. Movable Type has a significant yearly fee.
Determine a Budget
As you gather publishing information, you should also be developing and refining your budget. Costs to consider include:
Website development: It's a fairly low cost if you use a template and handle any customization yourself. If you bring in a web designer, the cost can run from several hundred to a few thousand dollars.
Editor: If you take that role, you don’t have to pay yourself, but you should have another income source or money set aside to meet living expenses. If you hire an editor, it should be at a substantial rate. Depending on the workload, the position can be freelance. Also plan for a separate copy editor.
Writers: Some writers will work for a byline or because they share your devotion to the magazine, but that gets old quickly. You should offer at least a token fee per article, but increase the fee to a more reasonable rate as the magazine grows.
Success won’t come quickly, so make sure you have enough funds through a small business loan, crowdfunding campaign or your own reserves to keep you going for at least a year.
Advertising Is Vital
Your online magazine will not succeed without ad sales. A contextual advertising network such as Google Adsense, Apt from Yahoo! and Microsoft Pub Center can provide pay-per-click ads on your website at no cost. Income, however, depends on your site’s traffic and how many readers click on those ads. If you want to sell ads directly, you’ll need an advertising sales staff. A local ad staff can be especially valuable if your magazine has a local or regional focus.

How to Throw a casual wine tasting partyIn Feburary 2016 19,

In Feburary 2016 19,
Plan the date so that you can have 6-8 guests. Ask each couple or person to bring an appetizer and one bottle of wine in a paper bag (have bag available for those that did not remember.)
Ask your guests to arrive promptly at a specific time so you can begin eating and wine tasting at the same time. Fashionably late doesn't work for this party!
Specify a maximum price range on the wine. It's up to each person if they want to try and 'fool' everyone with a cheap wine, or give them a taste of an expensive one. If possible, decide ahead of time whether to taste whites or reds.
When guests arrive, the host should remove the cork and place the bottle in a paper bag if they did not arrive that way. Once all wine has arrived, in random order, write a number each bag. Place a rubber band around the top, or tie a ribbon around the neck of the bottle to keep the bag from falling off.
Have paper and pencils ready for your guests with a chart already drawn. Have numbers down the side and ratings across the top, leave room for comments on the right side. This will be used to rate the wines. You can even have a column to guess the price!
Start by having everyone fill a plate with food and start to enjoy the appetizers. Provide everyone with a wine glass and pour a small amount of the same bottle into each glass. You don't have to empty the bottle, leave some so when the 'tasting' is over, those that like the various wines can have a bit more.
Encourage conversation about the wine, how does it taste? Can people tell if it's a Merlot or Cabernet? What's the value? You don't have to be a wine enthusiast with all the right words to have fun at this party. Keep it simple. Have them rate it on a scale of 1 to 5 with five being the best.
Even though you are eating a variety of foods, and some wine tastes better than others with different flavors - this is for fun - not for the professional wine tasters.
Compare and have fun! Repeat with the remaining bottles of wine, just a few sips for every person out of each bottle is enough.
When done, tally up the scores and see who is the winner! Was it the $5 bottle of the $20 bottle? Who wants more?

How to Create an Inexpensive WebsiteIn Feburary 2016 17,

In Feburary 2016 17,
Purchase a domain name to your liking. Determine what fits your needs. If it's a company website, purchase your company name. If it is a hobby, purchase a domain name that fits with that interest. Two sites to purchase domains from are GoDaddy.com and Namecheap.com.
Sign up for hosting. If cost is a consideration, go with shared hosting because it's the cheapest. Shared hosting is a package where the web host puts thousands of people on one server expecting no one to use that much in resources. It makes it cheap for you and profitable for them. Some top sites for hosting are GoDaddy.com and HostGator.com.
Connect the web hosting to the domain name by attaching the nameservers to the domain name. To do this, log into your domain name management and click on nameservers. Then change the ones that are already there with the ones your web host provided.
Search Google for different types of content management systems. Two of the most effective ones are WordPress.org and Joomla.org. Both make it very easy to put a site up on the web.
Download the files for the CMS and upload them to your site. To do this, use a FTP client such as FTP-project.org. This is one of the better ones and is very easy to use. Login using your domain name, username and password. Then drag files from your desktop to your server.
Search Google for themes pertinent to your choice of CMS. So, if you chose WordPress, look up, 'Free WordPress Themes.' You'll find thousands of themes to choose from. Choose the one you want, download it and then upload it using the FTP client you installed.
Begin creating your pages. The website is up, the site has a template and now all you need are the actual words and images to go along with the site. Any information you want your website to have can be easily added using the CMS back end.

How to Set Up a Website URLIn Feburary 2016 06,

In Feburary 2016 06,
Get a URL. URL stands for uniform resource locater and this is how people find you on the web. Come up with a good name that will communicate exactly who you are and what you do or want to do. You also need to do this with as short a name as possible so that when you tell people your URL, they will be able to remember it. You will have to try several names for your URL, though, because most of the best simple URLs are already taken. Go to a domain name registrar and register your URL. The registrar will let you search for URLs and tell you if they are taken. Some registrars are located in the resource section below.
Find a host. To have a website you need to have a place that will host your files. Your files are what comprise your website. A host is the place that keeps all of your files and the URL points to these files. Hosting can range in price from $5 a month to several hundred (as of 2009). For most beginners, the cheap option is fine. IWhen you have a large organization that will have thousands of visitors or more a day, then you need expensive hosting that will accommodate an extremely large amount of traffic. Most hosting companies will give you the ability to register your URL directly with them. This is the best option because if you register elsewhere you will have to point that registrar to your host. This is not extremely difficult but is an extra step.
Create a site. To get your site going you will need to create at least one page called a homepage. You will need to either use website creation software or create this manually. It is much simpler to do this with software like Frontpage or Dreamweaver. Some hosts have a built-in tool to help you make pages. You can also use a content management system or CMS. A CMS is software that you install with your host or they may already have it set up to use. Every host provider will give specific instructions on where and how to upload your files and how to use a CMS if they have the ability; you just need to ask the host. Some examples of CMS tools are Wordpress and Joomla. If you are not using a CMS, then your homepage needs to be called index.htm or index.html. The index page is the page that will come up when anyone types in your URL.
Learn and improve. Your site is setup and your URL should now be working. Now just start building more web pages and links to improve your site. You can do this by learning some HTML and learning more about your software or CMS tool.
